What are the causes of hirsutism?

Hirsutism is the excess of terminal hair: thick, pigmented hair which, before puberty, grows only on the scalp, eyebrows and eyelashes.

It can appear in women in places where it is not desired, such as the upper lip, chin, areola, legs, among others.

Hirsutism is often linked to genetic factors (especially if the family comes from the Mediterranean region) and to hormonal factors such as contraceptive pills, menopause, polycystic ovarian syndrome or the adrenal glands.

In the case of menopause, mild hirsutism is considered, as there is a slight increase in male hormones (androgens) and a decrease in estrogen.
