One of the cheapest street drugs, but the deadliest available today is known as KD, Katie or Zombie. This drug may contain different ingredients, but the common denominator is always bug spray.
Users take marijuana, banana leaves, tobacco or spices and sprinkle them with an insect spray, most often Raid. When they smoke this concoction, the users hover for about 45 minutes, virtually oblivious.
An addictive and deadly drug:
While some people decide to roll their own drugs, others buy it for about $ 20 a bag. No matter where they get it, this drug is incredibly addictive and absolutely deadly.
In recent weeks, Indianapolis doctors have faced a dozen overdoses of KD a day. Even for users who do not overdose while taking KD, its effects are incredibly disturbing and cause what the authorities describe as "zombie" reactions.
Witnesses describe users as people who become "slow and lethargic", and lose any motor function or ability to communicate with others. In short, while KD users are in crisis, they become completely oblivious and completely unable to control their actions.
"We find them without their clothes, eating grass, taking dirt on the ground and trying to put some in their mouth," said Captain Chris Major of the fire department.
This may not be surprising given the current insect repellent ingredients like Raid. These sprays usually contain piperonyl butoxide, permethrin,
cypermethrin and imiprothrin, all of which are extremely harmful
chemicals. And, when mixed with other ingredients and smoked, this cocktail
becomes even more toxic.
